Twenty-One

“What do you mean, we’re not supposed to leave?” Thomas shakes his head as the refugees continue to pack their things up for a long journey. One that apparently, they’re not going to take.

“I mean just what I said, Thomas. There’s danger coming and we can’t leave yet.”

His eyes narrow to slits. “Your alien boyfriend told us all that this store was a death trap. That we’d be fools to make our stand here.”

“Apparently we don’t have a choice any longer.”

I totally miss the fact that Thomas just called Vrak my boyfriend. It doesn’t bother me, though. In fact, it sounds sort of right.

What doesn’t feel right is this mounting sense of doom I have. I can feel something bad coming. I don’t know what it is, but apparently my jalshagar is feeling it too.

I’d rather err on the side of caution.

“What if you’re wrong?” he asks.

I let out a nervous laugh. “Thomas, I’m praying that I’m going to be wrong, okay? Just spread the word and get ready. If you have weapons, now is the time to be ready to use them.”

He heaves an exasperated sigh but turns about and cups his hands to his mouth. “Change of plans,” he shouts above the din. “Hey! Stop! I said change of plans!”

Slowly, the refugees stop packing up their things and turn to face Thomas. “We’re not leaving yet. We need to get ready to defend this place.”

A general muttering rises up, but Thomas raises his hand. “I don’t like the yo yo bullshit any more than the rest of you. Sharlene, take the children into the freezer and lock yourselves in. Everyone else, grab a weapon and pick your spot. We might be in for a long night.”

The refugees begin to obey, albeit slowly. I’m upset that out of all fifty of them I only know two. That means everyone else that I knew in this town is now lying dead under a pile of rubble.

Vrak is right. War is nothing but a huge waste.

I hear the front doors open and Vrak hustles through. One look in his eyes makes me shiver. “What’s wrong?”

His jaw sets hard, and he seems reluctant to speak. “All of my men are dead.”

He starts checking his ammo pouches. “Do you still have the pistol I gave you?”

“Yes, it’s going to throw my back out, dragging this heavy thing around.”

“You’re going to need it. We’re going to need it. We’ll need every gun to stand a chance.”

“Vrak, you’re scaring me.”

“I’m sorry.” He cups my cheek with his smooth palm. “I wish I had better news. But Odex are coming.”

I shudder to think of them. Odex are bigger than Vakutan, weighing an average of eight hundred pounds. Picture a slightly smaller King Kong, but with an even worse attitude and capable of wielding weapons.

They’re the elite shock troops of the Ataxian army. We’re a bunch of refugees and one admittedly awesome Vakutan soldier. I’m not wild about our odds. He picks up on my fear.

“Hey,” he says, pressing his forehead against my own.
